About

WMF Britain

World Monuments Fund (WMF) is the leading non-governmental organisation for the protection of cultural heritage. WMF Britain is the largest affiliate office outside WMF’s headquarters in New York.

We secure the future of exceptional works of architecture through fundraising, conservation management, education, advocacy and partnership building.  As a registered charity in the UK (Registered charity no. 1126578), with no endowment or Government support, our vital work relies on the support of our members and generous donors.

Each of the endangered sites we support has different needs. It could be any type of building; a church or power station, sculpture or ancient rock carving, cultural landscape or historic garden. Many are in Britain; some are international. A building might be chosen for its iconic design, or it might be historically significant, or perhaps it’s unusually rare or fragile. Where one needs some publicity, another demands a complete restoration.

But one characteristic of all our projects is the outstanding benefit we make to the communities who own and use threatened buildings. That’s where our independence comes in: we’re able to respond freely to challenges and assemble the right partnerships to ensure the best possible outcome.

We believe the built heritage is everyone’s environment, and we invite you to join us in protecting it as an involved supporter.

Our projects

Although we engage with cultural sites in a whole variety of ways, the centrepiece of our work is conservation management out in the field. The results of this work are a measure of our success as an organisation.
