Shobdon Church, Herefordshire
Help WMF Britain Complete the Fundraising Required to restore this unique Church
Although elements of its twelfth century origins survive, this small country parish church has the most complete Rococo Gothick interior in the UK, including all its furniture. Architecturally, it is one of the country's most important churches. It is thought to be closely associated with Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill, because The Hon. John Bateman who was also intimately involved with the construction of Strawberry Hill in the 18th century is thought to be its creator.
Shobdon is suffering from the failure of timber beams including infestations of death-watch beetle and from dampness due to poor drainage. These issues were the reasons for its successful nomination to the 2010 Watch and subsequent grant of £550,000 from English Heritage towards the total £830,000 restoration programme.
Just a few months ago, WMF Britain was able to announce a £50,000 matching challenge grant to encourage donors. Every £1 donated through WMF Britain will be matched one to one. Thanks to the generosity of past supporters of Shobdon and WMF Britain, we have matched £40,000, leaving us with a match shortfall of only £10,000. However, even when this match is completed, Shobdon still requires another £90,000 to reach the full amount require of £830,000.
We'd like to encourage more donors will come forward, so that together we can complete the repair of this important community building.
This project is generously supported by The Paul Mellon Estate.
