Education
Public Education
At their best, education and lifelong learning deploy scholarship and entertainment in equal measure to share knowledge- and shared knowledge generates care.
Many people enjoy the beauty of historic buildings. And preservation organizations cannot effectively rescue sites without local support: even when major funds secure conservation or restoration, the people who live with and near historic buildings remain the most committed guardians, with an interest in maintaining their local environment. Charity indeed begins at home.
Therefore, the future of historic sites often depends on the capacity of people at grass-roots transforming their enjoyment, through knowledge, into care.
Care can take several forms: understanding, helping and owning. Understanding the historical legacy that is manifested in architecture perpetuates interest, helping with the issues of management and maintenance can prevent dereliction, and when these don’t work sufficiently, some care enough to take on the risk of ownership and invest to create a valuable future for our stock of historic buildings.
It is unfortunate that in Britain, the culture of lifelong learning that promotes such care and opportunity is effectively being dismantled.

And that’s a major reason why we’re committed to outreach and education.
